3 Ways To Save Money On Lighting In Your Home

If you want to save money on energy in your home, the first place you need to start is with your lighting. Here are three ways that you can save money on your lights by making more energy efficient choices.

#1 Replace Your More Frequently Used Light Bulbs

Go through your home and figure out which light bulbs are the ones that you the most frequently. Generally, these are the light bulbs that are in your kitchen and bathroom, as well as the lights in your living room or family room where you hang out the most inside of your home.

Replacing the lights that you use the most frequently is a great way to start if you don't want to invest in changing all of the lights in your house and you want to see energy savings right away. When you change out your lights, you are going to want to purchase lights that are marked with the Energy Star label. These types of lights are designed to save you energy and have passed independent tests that verify that they will do just that. When you change out your old incandescent bulbs and replace them with energy efficient bulbs such as compact florescent lamps or light emitting diodes, you'll significantly cut down the amount of energy it takes to power your lights. A home or kitchen remodel could be a great opportunity to replace some of the light bulbs.

#2 Install Dimmer Switches

The next thing that you can do is change out the switches that you use to control you lights. Consider switching out the switches that you use the most with dimmer switches. Dimmer switches will allow you to have a greater degree of control over the output of the light in your home. This will allow you to also have a greater control over the energy output of your lights. Make sure that the Energy Star lights that you have installed in your light fixtures are designed to work with dimmer switches.

#3 Put Your Lights On A Timer

The last thing that you can do to save money on your lights is to put them on a timer. There are lots of timers on the market that you can install so that your lights turn on and off on specific times. You can install a manual timer that attaches to each light in your home, or you can set up a remote timer that you can control wirelessly. Either way, set the timer up so that the lights are only on when you need them on. This is great for lights that you often forget to turn off in your home or for lights outside. For outside lights, you may want to use a combination of timers and motion sensor lights to keep your house well-lit while lowering your energy costs as well.
