When you are looking to redo your landscaping design of your yard, you may be wondering what you can do to be sure that all of your landscaping choices are eco-friendly and sustainable in nature. Luckily, there are a myriad of options available to you to create a unique and beautiful landscaping design choice for your yard while also being sustainable and eco-friendly. Get to know some of the more interesting possibilities that you can choose from so that you can get a few ideas and get started in your landscaping redesign project.
Use Recycled Glass Bottles In Your Landscaping
One of the ways that you can make your landscaping design more eco-friendly is to incorporate items that you would otherwise throw away into the materials you use for landscaping. Glass bottles, like wine, beer, and soda bottles are an example of materials that often end up in landfills that could otherwise be repurposed.
There are numerous ways that you can incorporate these bottles into your landscaping design. One option is to break the bottles and use the smaller pieces of glass to create mosaic stepping stones or stones for garden borders. These stones would be beautiful and unique and would sparkle in the sunlight.
Another method is to use wine bottles to create a wall in your backyard landscaping. Whether you are building a retaining wall or looking to create a wall around your outdoor patio space, you can use wine bottles in addition to the cement or other material that will hold the wall together to create something beautiful and entirely unique. The wind bottles will allow light to filter through the wall but will still keep the area private (if you wish) and the wall will also still be sturdy and solid.
Use Discarded Wood Pallets As Additional Garden Space
If you have limited space for your landscaping design or merely want to have some of your herbs right up next to your home for easy picking but don't want them to take up excess space, you can put discarded wood pallets to use in your landscaping design. The wood pallets that many stores have to hold large shipments of product are often thrown out or discarded after a while to make room for new pallets of product that come into the store.
You can head to a local salvage yard, landfill, or talk to the stores themselves about taking some of these unwanted wood pallets off of their hands. Once you have a pallet or two, you will want to clean or rinse them off and attach a landscaping fabric over the back and the bottom of the pallet, pulling it tight and securing it with staples or nails. You may want to add support to this fabric by adding a 2x4 or other piece of wood as a brace for the fabric.
Then, set the pallet up vertically rather than horizontally, but keep it at a slight angle for now. You will then fill the pallet with potting soil all the way to the top. Now, you are ready to place your plants into the soil between the slats of the pallet. Be sure your plants are securely in the soil. Carefully set the pallet garden flush against a wall or other sturdy structure and secure it to the wall. Add more potting soil to replace any that fell out in this process. Now, you have a vertical pallet herb garden for your backyard landscaping.
With these two ideas in mind, you can begin to see how fun and easy it can be to make your landscaping more sustainable. And now, you can get started on your own backyard landscaping design with these concepts in mind. Before you know it, you will have a unique and beautifully landscaped yard that also happens to be eco-friendly.
