Removing Cat Urine Stains And Odors From Carpet

If you have a cat and it has peed on your carpet, it can be difficult to remove the smell and the stain.  The most important thing is to immediately remove as much moisture as you can. This will keep the urine from soaking into the padding and even the subfloor, where it is almost impossible to remove. If not cleaned properly, the urine odor will keep coming back.

Cat Urine Stains And Smells

Urine is made up of things like uric acid, creatinine, urea, and lipids. It is also made up of urochrome, which is what gives urine a yellow color. As the urine leaves your cats body, it has a high acid pH, and is broken down into carbon dioxide and ammonia when it hits your carpet. The ammonia can cause permanent color loss and damage. If you see a yellow spot in your carpet after your cat has peed, it may be color loss.

Urine can be hard to remove from your carpet because as the warm urine leaves your cat's body it starts growing bacteria as soon as it comes in contact with the microorganisms in your carpet. This bacterium gives off a gas, which is why it smells so bad.

Remove Stain And Odor With Enzymatic Cleaner

You can break down the odor and stain with an enzymatic cleaner. When using this cleanser, it will release cultures that eat the urine and bacteria, and then leave your carpet sanitary and smelling fresh.

You can also purchase a spray made with enzymes made especially for pet urine that works well. Removing the smell is important, because if the cat can still smell it they are likely to go back to that spot and urinate on it again.

You can purchase this type of carpet cleaning agent at most home improvement stores and pet stores. Follow the directions on how to use the cleaner you purchase.

Use A Wet Vac

When you are finished cleaning the carpet with the enzymatic cleaner, rinse the area with a wet vac. This machine will extract the cleaner and expel clean water onto your carpet, and suck dirty water back into the water tank.  If you do not have a wet vac, you can rent one in many home improvement stores. Follow the directions carefully for the wet vac you are using.

Use Baking Soda Carpet Freshener

When you are finished cleaning the carpet, you can freshen it up with a baking soda carpet freshener. Baking soda works well because it absorbs odors.

To make this carpet freshener you will need:

  • One cup dried, crushed herbs (lavender, rosemary, etc.)
  • One teaspoon of cinnamon
  • One teaspoon of ground cloves
  • One teaspoon of baking soda

Mix these ingredients together, and sprinkle it on your carpet. Let it sit for one hour, and then vacuum. If you have any leftover, store in an airtight container.

If you still smell cat urine after cleaning your carpet, you should consider hiring a professional carpet cleaner to clean the carpet for you.
